“Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4
Most of us wouldn’t think of going out in public without preening to some extent. I like to look my best, for the most part, when I go out. Yet, I am ashamed to say that on occasion I have spent more time dressing and adorning my outer self than I have spent on preparing my spirit for the day. The hidden person of the heart must be tended to in preparation for the day even more so than the outer self. The imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit comes from time spent daily before the Lord in prayer, reading the Word and waiting on Him. That is how to dress the inner self and a well dressed inner man or woman is what is precious in the sight of God.
It doesn’t matter whether you wear a suit and tie or a designer dress; you can dress to the nines or wear your comfy old jeans just don’t neglect to adorn your inner self with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, the garments that really matter.
