“Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.” Romans 16:17
So what then, is our relationship to be with those, who after we have done all that we can, refuse to live peaceably with us? Loving “from a distance” isn’t a very Christ-like option and is impossible if that person is a family member or coworker. Know that this instruction from Paul is in no way intended to replace Christ’s commandment to love but rather to inform us so that neither our peace nor His truth will be compromised. Mathew Henry states in his commentary on this verse that ‘if truth be once deserted, unity and peace will not last long.’
Love, yes, but be on the alert and don’t be drawn into false teachings. Stand firm upon the Word and serve as an example of peace, truth and love to all.
