“And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same manner as He walked.” 1 John 2:3-6
Enoch, one of the most intriguing men in the Bible, is one we would know nothing about were it not for his walk (see Genesis 5:22 and 24). Enoch’s lifestyle was so in step with God that one day he just walked on home with Him. Abraham had a wonderful relationship with God but fell out of step on occasion. In Genesis 17:1 God had to instruct Abraham to walk before Him after a few missteps. Perhaps God was reminding Abraham that not only was He watching but so was the rest of the world. The Israelites, on the other hand, were instructed to follow after God step by step as He led them through the wilderness in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. They had not walked properly and needed to be carefully taught. For today’s Christian it is just as imperative that we know and keep His commandments. His Word must be deeply rooted in us and our hearts absolutely set on obedience if our daily walk is to be up to His standard. To walk in truth we must abide in Him daily, fix our eyes upon Him and follow Jesus example of righteousness.
In the margin of my bible I have written next to these verses that if we know God it should change our lives and cause us to want to do things the way Jesus did. Dear reader, remember today that our walk says so much more about us, and who we are in Him, than our talk does so walk in the same manner as He walked and you’ll always keep in step!
