“Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ He said, ‘you heard of from Me.’” Acts 1:4
When I was a new Christian I hadn’t been taught anything about the Holy Spirit and I knew little about relying on the Lord to guide and direct me so I tried to walk my walk on my own steam. I thought I knew what was right but I was truly powerless to do it. I’ve since learned that I really shouldn’t attempt anything without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The commandment to wait that Jesus gave to the early church was for their benefit; they would need the Holy Spirit’s power as well as His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control as they spread the Gospel. Waiting for the Holy Spirit to move in our lives is just as necessary today because His power doesn’t run out and the Fruit of His Spirit draws others to Him as well.
The Holy Spirit makes all the difference in whether we burn out in our own well-doing or whether we are supernaturally empowered to do those things He has prepared for us to do.
